Til grundvallar liggur hugtakið skapandi kennileiti, sem lýsir umbreytingu hversdagslegra borgarhluta með listrænum hætti þannig að þeir öðlast nýja merkingu og hlutverk í nærumhverfinu. Rannsóknin byggir á megindlegri aðferð þar sem lögð er áhersla á viðhorf íbúa í Reykjavík og á Akureyri
til þessara skapandi kennileita. Fræðilegur rammi ritgerðarinnar byggir að mestu á kenningu Throsby (2000) um menningarlegt gildi, auk tengdra hugtaka á borð við félagsauð (Bourdieu, 1986; Coleman, 1988; Putnam, 2000), staðgerð (Jacobs, 1961; Landry, 2008; Project for Public Spaces, 2012; Whyte, 1980) og staðartengsl (Low & Altman, 1992; Scannell & Gifford, 2010).
<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">This thesis looks at how creative alterations in public spaces can affect the cultural value of communities. The term creative landmarks is used to describe artistic modifications to everyday urban objects. The study is based on a quantitative method using a survey answered by residents in Reykjavík and Akureyri. The theoretical background is mostly based on Throsby’s (2000) idea of cultural value, along with concepts like social capital (Bourdieu, 1986; Coleman, 1988; Putnam, 2000), placemaking (Jacobs, 1961; Landry, 2008; Project for Public Spaces, 2012; Whyte,
1980), and place attachment (Low & Altman, 1992; Scannell & Gifford, 2010). The data was collected with an online questionnaire and analysed using basic statistics and theme analysis from the open answers. The focus is on how people experience and understand the role of creative landmarks in their surroundings. The results show that many participants feel these landmarks improve the look of their town, support local
identity, and help people think more about culture and heritage. Some also said they can affect how people feel and encourage discussion about art in daily life. The results also indicate a lack of information shared about the origin of the creative landmarks. The thesis shows that creative landmarks could be useful tools in cultural planning especially if local people are involved, the projects are well made and there is readily
available information about them.
Keywords: Creative landmarks, cultural value, public space, social capital, citizen participation</dim:field>
