<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">The finngálkn, a hybrid creature found in Icelandic literary and manuscript tradition, has received little focused scholarly attention beyond brief mentions of its etymology or physical form. While it appears in multiple medieval texts, its role in shaping and
reflecting cultural values has not been fully examined. This thesis investigates how the finngálkn is depicted across a range of sources from the 12th to the 18th centuries, including encyclopedic texts, Íslendingasögur, Fornaldarsögur, and Riddarasögur. By analyzing these appearances across genres and time periods, the project identifies
recurring patterns in the creature’s symbolic function and narrative role. It argues that the finngálkn reflects shifting medieval conceptions of monstrosity, hybridity, and the boundaries between the human and non-human. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how Icelandic literature encoded cultural anxieties through monstrous
figures.
