<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="is">Þessi rannsókn skoðar notkun samsæriskenninga sem tól til að grafa undan trausti almennings á lýðræðislegum stofnunum, með auka áherslu á mögulegri upprisu popúlisma á Íslandi. Skoðuð voru sagnfræðileg og samtímaleg dæmi um hvernig einræðisstjórnir og stjórnmálaleiðtogar nýta sér samsæriskenningar til að grafa undan mótherjum sínum og hrífa um leið almenning með sér. Rannsóknin byggist á starfsrannsóknum frá Bandaríkjunum, og greinir stjórnmálastefnu  Donalds Trumps. Rannsóknin nýtir sér þriggja þrepa mælskufræðilíkan til að meta tilvist popúlískrar orðræðu á Íslandi, með áherslu á aðgerðir og umræðu  formanna og flokksmanna Miðflokksins. Niðurstöður benda til að veruleg hætta stafi af notkun samsæriskenninga sem pólitísks vopns við lýðræðislegt stjórnarfar. Þær veikja traust til lýðræðislegra stofnana og starfssemi þeirra. Rannsóknin sýnir fram á mikilvægi fjölmiðlalæsis og gagnrýninnar hugsunar þegar kemur að því að berjast við dreifingu á falsfréttum og skaðlegum samsæriskenningum. Í lokin leggur rannsóknin áherslu á nauðsyn þess að taka upplýsta og gagnrýna þátttöku í stjórnmálum til að vernda heilindi lýðræðislegra ferla.</dim:field>
<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">This study examines the use of conspiracy theories as a tool to destroy public trust in democratic institutions, with an increased emphasis on the possible resurgence of populism in Iceland. Historical and contemporary examples of how dictatorial regimes and political leaders use conspiracy theories to undermine their opponents and sway the public were examined. The study is based on career research from the United States, analyzes the political tactics of Donald Trump. The study uses a three-step rhetorical model to assess the status of the existence of populist discourse in Iceland, focusing on the actions and debates of the Center Party and its leaders. Findings indicate that the use of conspiracy theories as a political weapon poses a significant risk to democratic governance. As they weaken trust in democratic institutions and their actions. The study demonstrates the importance of media literacy and critical thinking when it comes to combating the spread of fake news and harmful conspiracy theories. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the need for informed and critical participation in politics to protect the integrity of democratic processes.</dim:field>
