<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">This study examines how independent musicians experience their access to concert performance opportunities at Harpa Concert Hall, the barriers they encounter, and whether access is equal across different musical genres. The aim of the study was to shed light on the experiences and perceptions of musicians, as well as their interactions with this major cultural institution. Emphasis is placed on exploring the social and economic factors that influence access to and participation in concert activities at Harpa. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews with seven independent musicians, all of whom have diverse experience performing at the venue.
The theoretical framework draws on the concepts of Pierre Bourdieu and Howard S. Becker concerning cultural production. Through this lens, Harpa can be understood as a field where different forms of capital, power, and collaboration intersect. The study thus reveals how economic structures can shape real access to cultural institutions such as Harpa, despite the declared equality.
The findings indicate that, while all musicians formally enjoy equal access to Harpa, in practice the high costs of venue rental and additional expenses represent the main obstacle. This financial threshold means that access is effectively determined by economic ability rather than artistic or professional merit, leading to indirect discrimination between musical styles and project types. Thus, equality of access appears to exist on the surface, while underlying economic rules create structural inequality.
