<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">The aim of this study was to examine the effects of two implementations of the digital behavior support system Beanfee Direct on academic engagement and disruptive behavior in a general middle school classroom. The study also examined the effects of a classroom-wide implementation and the simultaneous use of both classroom-wide and individualized implementations. Beanfee Direct is based on principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, emphasizing positive reinforcement and the visual presentation of clear expectations.
A single-case experimental design with a multiple baseline across settings was used to evaluate the functional relation between the intervention and behavioral changes. Participants were two students in the same classroom who demonstrated low academic engagement and disruptive behavior during lessons. One participant received both classroom-wide and individualized implementations simultaneously, whereas the other participant received only the classroom-wide implementation. Academic engagement and disruptive behavior were measured across three academic subjects before and after implementation.
Results indicated that academic engagement increased on average in some subjects following the implementation of Beanfee Direct, although findings varied across participants and subjects. One participant demonstrated more noticeable improvements and reduced variability, particularly during Icelandic lessons, whereas the other participant showed more inconsistent changes. Disruptive behavior decreased on average in some settings for both participants, especially in Icelandic and mathematics, although findings remained variable.
Overall, the findings suggest that Beanfee Direct may positively influence academic engagement and reduce disruptive behavior in certain settings. However, no clear evidence indicated that the simultaneous use of classroom-wide and individualized implementations produced greater effects than the classroom-wide implementation alone. Interpretation of the findings is limited by variability in the data, a limited number of measurement points in some settings, and phase overlap. Nevertheless, the findings provide preliminary evidence supporting the potential utility of Beanfee Direct and highlight the need for further research.</dim:field>
